This was what ended up being the inspiration sketch for the build, though we have not yet added the “stage two hut” in the branches above. The access ladder ended up being an old piece of an extension ladder that the kids decorated with a couple cans of spray paint.
From overseas, and with Grandfather’s help in PA, we used this photo along with several others to work out the site realities after the tree guys removed all the vines, briars and poison ivy. It is a beautiful Silver Maple and I didn’t want our design to endanger it in any way, so we limited ourselves to a set number (3) of lag screw attachment points with the weight of the deck primarily resting on legs.
The closer we got to build day, the more we realized that the root system was going to be a major factor in setting the position of the whole thing. This sketch, done with Google drawings was one I sent to Grandfather who was still at home in Maryland so we could talk on the phone about strategy. I love the problem solving aspect of being a creative. Though this root system was pretty close to being an “insurmountable” obstacle which might have foiled our plans.
Half the day was spent excavating the footers to below frost level, because the ground is so full of rocks and roots. Once the uprights were standing plumb in Quickcrete and boxed in at deck level, the build went pretty easily. The real expertise here came from Grandfather with his truckful of tools and years of experience as the University Park Handyman. The muscle and construction experience came with Uncle Jon. Jonas brought the exuberant energy and can-do spirit, and I brought the design. It was a banner day!
The finished treehouse continues to be a great place for kids and adults alike to hang out when we are at Grandmom’s. The swing turned out to be a most popular feature, as its long radius is perfect for “underdog” pushes that carry the rider almost level with the railing (as important now that the kids are in their teens as when they were smaller back in 2015!) The crane works well and the deck fits lawn chairs enough for the whole family for afternoon ice cream breaks.
