When my sister was making a book for her adopted son, Zachary, she asked me to create an illustration to help him “imagine” his Ukrainian birth-mom. Without an actual image of her, I needed to use some general reference images of Ukrainian women in traditional dress to give me a sense of how to draw her … and help him to imagine her too.
We were waiting in Terminal 2 and this cluster of bags felt quite representative of our lives over the last 13 years. We travel quite a bit and we really like to be together in a clump wherever we are. I love my family.
I love canoeing! It’s pretty much my happy place … and has been since I was a kid. There was something even deeply peaceful about watching my son and nephew slowly crawling this small Pocono Mountain reservoir with my brother-in-law in the cedar strip canoe he made.
