Time Keeper
Keepers of Chaouen series
Oil on canvas - 2011 - 50cm x 50cm - (available, $800 USD)
The Time Keeper embodies the ability of Moroccan men to resist being rushed when it is café time. A glass of tea and a sunbeam are enough (with the increasing help of a cell phone!) to keep track of time.
The Keepers of Chefchaouen, in my imagination, represent the countless old men who sit around the edges of Uta Hammam square in the center of the “City of the Blue Pearl” of Morocco. I learned a lot about painting in this series working on one right after another. In this particular piece, I was pushing for allowing light to be its own character in the story. I was pleased with the believable presence of light in his jellaba, tea and skin.
Varnished and framed in black wood, like the rest of the works
