Dr. George Fuller
Oil on canvas - 1999 - 40in x 30in (commissioned, private collection)
This "presidential" painting was commissioned by WTS in honor of Dr. Fuller's retirement in 1999. I painted from a pile of family photos, compositing it all together ... because it was to be a surprise. His wife snuck me one of his favorite jackets and a friend modeled it for me. His colleagues couldn't agree on which piece of sports equipment I should put in his hands (basketball or baseball bat?), so I compromised with the more appropriate Bible and added a baseball tie-tack. Dr. Fuller was gladdened by this last detail ... "Right where it should be ... over my heart." It was my first portrait commission, and I found I loved the process.
Commissioning a painting of someone you love or want to honor could be one of the most satisfying investments you'll ever make. Commissioned works can have subjects other than people, but I love to paint portraits of people. Contact me if you have an idea for a commissioned painting or drawing.
